The album was supposed to be called “Star”, and that’s why Michael Stipe took this interesting picture of a Star-shaped Motel sign, close to the studio where they were recording.
Eventually, the name was changed to the slogan of one of the band's favorite restaurant in their hometown of Athens, Georgia. “Weaver D’s Delicious Fine Foods – Automatic for the People”.
The picture of the star, well, that stuck. And even though the actual Motel sign didn’t survive a hurricane, it had already conquered immortality through music history.
Surprisingly, “Everybody Hurts”, probably the one song every living creature immediately associates with R.E.M., was only the 4th single to come out of this album.
